Gathering Medals in Gothenburg
Of five finals held at European athletics championships on Tuesday, four medals went to the team of Russia. Tatyana Lysenko broke the championship record to power to gold in hammer throwing, where another Russian, Gulfiya Khanafeyeva, finished second. Andrey Yepishin ran to a second place win in the men’s 100m final and Valery Borchin took another silver in the men’s 20km walk. The rush for medals continued Wednesday.
On the day three of European athletics championships in Gothenburg, Russia’s duet Yekaterina Grigoriyeva and Irina Khabarova won silver and bronze in women’s 100m, where the gold went to Kim Gevaert of Belgium.
In men’s 400m, Marc Raquil of France edged out Russian Vladislav Frolov, who came through with the silver. Russia's Olga Zaytseva won the women’s 400m semifinal and will run in the final.
In women’s 400m hurdles, Russian Yevgenia Isakova snatched a victory from Olympic champ Fani Halkia of Greece. Andrey Silnov of Russia reigned in men’s high jump.
Olympic long jump champion Tatyana Lebedeva secured the victory in women’s triple jump, where the bronze went to another Russian, Anna Pyatykh.
In women’s pole vault, World and Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva qualified for Saturday's final, where she is expected to lead in a tough battle with her compatriot Svetlana Feofanova.
Russian Olga Kaniskina finished second the women’s 20km walk, having yielded to Ryta Turava of Belarus.
