Russians Running for Medals
Russia’s Inga Abitova and Lidiya Grigoryeva powered to gold and bronze medals at the women's 10,000m final at the European athletics championships August 7, 2006, having fueled the medal rush of our team in Gothenburg.
On Tuesday, Russian Andrey Yepishin finished second the 100m distance in 10.10 seconds and took silver at the European championships. Another silver medal went to Valeriy Borchin (1.20:00) in men’s 20km walk. Borchin yielded to Francisco Fernandez of Spain, who defended his champ title (19.09).
Russian Svetlana Klyuka finished first to reach 800m final, and her compatriot Olga Kotlyarova won another semi-final.
Still, it was the women’s hammer throwing that stole the show. In line with all forecasts, Russia’s Tatyana Lysenko broke twice the championship record to power to gold with 76.67m. Another Russian, Gulfiya Khanafeyeva, finished second with 74.50m.
In Gothenburg, the achievements of Russia are even more precious, as Chief Coach Valery Kulichenko built up the team mostly of the young athletes so that they could amass experience ahead of Beijing Olympic Games.
