Russia Swims First
Russia was the first in the rush of medals at the European Aquatic Championships that ended in Budapest Sunday. The overall victory was ensured by final brilliant performance of Dmitry Sautin, Gleb Galperin and Dmitry Dobroskok, Nataliya Umyskova and Nadezhda Bazhina, Arkady Vyatchanin, Elena Bogomazova and by the men’s team in 4x100m relay.
For twice Olympic champ Dmitry Sautin, 32, the 3m springboard gold was the 10th won in European championships. The silver went to his compatriot Alexander Dobroskok. Alexander’s brother, Dmitry Dobroskok and Gleb Galperin won the gold in synchronous platform diving competition. The pair was fantastic despite that Galperin broke instep bone on July 7, i.e. less than a month before the competitions.
A new duet of Russian girls, Nataliya Umyskova and Nadezhda Bazhina clinched the gold in synchronized 3m springboard diving competitions, having left far behind the much more experienced pair of Germany.
In addition to 100m distance, Russia’s Arkady Vyatchanin, 22, took the gold in the men's 200m backstroke final on Saturday, setting Europe’s record of 1:55.44.
Moreover, Russia's Elena Bogomazova pulled out the gold from British Kate Hayward at the women’s 50m breaststroke. And the men’s medley relay team clinched gold in 4x100m.
