Davydenko Wins Sopot Open
Russia’s Nikolaly Davydenko won his second title in 2006 after a tough match against German Florian Mayer at the Sopot Open in Poland on Sunday. In the women’s tournament in San Diego, Maria Sharapova will face Kim Clijsters in the final of the Acura Classic.
Usually cautious Nikolay Davydenko said before the final he would be much surprised if he lost to Florian Mayer. Davydenko knew nearly nothing about that German till Sopot Open.

Davydenko won the Sopot trophy in the end, but the victory wasn’t easy for him.

Though not so experienced and tough as the Russian, Florian Mayer lost the first set only on the tiebreak. Davydenko was almost perfect in six games of the second set, when he reached the score of 5-1. But Mayer won six games in a row and leveled the match. The Russian broke twice in the decider to win 7-6 (8-6) 5-7 6-4 his second title this year.

Russia’s Marat Safin yielded to Arnaud Clement in the semifinals in the Legg Mason Classic final in Washington. His compatriot Dmitry Tursunov lost to Andy Murray there.

The good news is that Maria Sharapova beat Patty Schnyder 7-5 6-4 in San Diego semis to face Kim Clijsters, who overwhelmed Nicole Vaidisova.
