Hingis Waiting for Kurni
Russia's Maria Sharapova beat her compatriot Vasilisa Bardina (6-4 6-1) at the 2006 Acura Classic women's tennis tournament in Carlsbad, California, August 1, 2006. But the front-page news was the possible revival of Martina Hingis-Anna Kurnikova duet.
Retiring from the sport and coming back to it are the highlights of two big tennis tournaments currently held in the United States. Having overwhelmed Meilen Tu at the 2006 Acura Classic, Martina Hingis of Switzerland proved her return was well-justified and successful. Hingis is talking about the comeback of Anna Kurnikova, which hasn’t happened yet. She said Kurni is thinking about playing pair with her.

Retired tennis star Kurnikova hasn’t played at professional tournaments since 2003, but never said she won't do it again.

The only condition is that Kurni should turn to tennis full time, showing the absolutely professional attitude, Hingis made clear.

On Wednesday, Maria Sharapova showed up on the court first time since she yielded to Amelie Mauresmo at the Wimbledon semifinals. The break lasted for nearly a month and Sharapova has to play a lot to get fit for the US Open.

At Acura Classic, Maria faced her compatriot Vasilisa Bardina, who is the No. 88 in the tennis rating. For Sharapova, the victory wasn’t very easy that day. Bardina was leading 4-1 in the first set, when Maria accelerated to crush the opponent.

Andre Agassi of the U.S. tragically yielded to the little-known Andrea Stoppini of Italy at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington August 1, 2006. Agassi will retire after the US Open that starts August 28 and is playing the farewell matches now.
