Ukrainian President Ready to Break Up Supreme Rada
The time when Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko may bring in a PM candidate to Supreme Rada expires today, August 2, 2006. Unwilling to yield the office to Viktor Yanukovich, Yushchenko met leaders of biggest factions yesterday to canvass the possible dissolution of parliament.
Yushchenko and his Our Ukraine bloc launched the last physiological attack on the Regions Party yesterday. The president spent all day meeting leaders of parliament factions. The highlight of the Tuesday get-togethers with Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko, Our Ukraine and Regions Party was breaking up the Supreme Rada and holding early elections to parliament.
The meeting of Viktor Yushchenko and Viktor Yanukovich lasted till late at night.
A bureaucrat close to Yushchenko said the president will OK any PM. “The main thing is that his name wouldn’t be Yanukovich. The parties will seal the National Unity Universal and widen the coalition led by the Regions Party. Otherwise, the president may either dissolve Supreme Rada and call early elections or withdraw to opposition in tandem with Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko. After the yesterday’s meetings, it was decided to shelve sealing the Universal, the source specified.
Meanwhile, the Regions Party doesn’t look agitated. Unlike our Ukraine that was creating the Orange Union with Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko and Social Party and negotiating with the Regions Party at the same time, the latter has been always consistent since the spring elections to Supreme Rada. The Regions Party enjoys peak popularity now and the parliament’s break-up will only consolidate its supporters.
Yulia Timoshenko doesn’t fear early elections either. She reasonably withdrew from backstage intrigues and remained the sole true holder of Maidan values. And her bloc is powerful enough to try strength against Regions Party and is ready to do it by reviving the union with Our Ukraine.
