Russia Wins First Gold in European Swimming Championships
Russia’s swimmers got two medals, gold and silver, on the opening day of the European Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Monday, July 31, 2006.
Russia’s Yury Prilukov, 22, won the men's 400m freestyle final at the European Swimming Championships, having set the Europe’s record of 3:45.73. Prilukov, for whom Budapest competitions are the third Europe’s championships, doesn't conceal that his purpose is winning both 400m and 1500m with personal records. And the first target has been attained already.
Russia’s team didn’t take part in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, where Germany overwhelmed the rivals and broke the world record. The Italians led in men’s competition, while the Russians finished second in 4x100 freestyle. The quartet of Yevgeny Lagunov, Andrey Grechin, Ivan Usov and Andrey Kapralov repeated the result showed two years ago, but this time, with no legendary Alexander Popov swimming for the team.
Arkady Vyatchanin was the best in the 100m backstroke semifinal (53.91) and breaststroker Roman Sludnov also swam to the 100m final. Silver winner of Olympic Games (200m backstroke), Stanislava Komarova finished eighth in the semifinals and luckily advanced to the final with 2:13.26.
