No Invasion, Apparently
July 22 was the first day of the first Emmaus 2006 Rock Festival held in the village of Emmaus near Tver, close to the Moscow Region. Emmaus is another attempt of Nashestvie (Invasion) arrangers, though that rock festival was staged in tandem with Nashe Radio (Our Radio).
The sameness of participants is the first thing that strikes the eye when looking at Emmaus and Nashestvie placards. Even formally beyond the creative control of Nashe Radio, the arrangers had to attract the same bands to this get-together of rock singers and their crowd. Same to Nashestvie, Emmaus audience won’t see Zemfira or DDT, and both events have had to confine to the absence of new stars.

If viewed as a certain continuation of Nashestvie concept, Emmaus is hardly in the same league with Nashestvie, let alone nearing the Woodstock atmosphere. The first day of Emmaus gathered no more than 10,000 onlookers and another 5,000 arrived by the afternoon of July 23, while Nashestvie has always drawn a crowd of at least 35,000 to 40,000.

As to the efficiency of the event, no final conclusion could be reached by close of the second day. “Most probably, we will be at minus,” said Andrey Matveyev, one of the festival’s producers. But the arrangers had one trump card – the concert of Leningrad band. This summer, the Muscovites will see this band on no other open-door stage within the grasp.
