Killers of Magadan Governor Found in Spain
Two Russian citizens, Alexander Zakharov and Martin Babakisyan were arrested in Spain on suspected participation in killing Magadan governor Valentin Tsvetkov. Russia’s enforcement bodies hope their extradition will take no time.
Spanish police spotted Martin Babakisyan and Alexander Zakharov in a resort town of Marbelia, where they rented two villas. They lived in an unpretending way and the locals thought them ordinary.
Babakisyan and Zakharov, who were arrested July 7, produced forged documents first, but the original ones were found during the house check, according to the police.
In 2004, Russia’s Prosecutor General Office added Babakisyan and Zakharov to the wanted list on suspected participation in shooting the late governor of the Magadan Region Valentin Tsvetkov. Tsvetkov was gunned down in Novy Arbat while walking to his Moscow office October 18, 2002.
The reason of the murder could have been the fish quotas. The prosecutors think (but with no strong evidence) the arrangers were Artur Anisimov and Sergey Filipenko, who allegedly provided criminal support to a few fishery firms in Far East. Apart from Babakisyan and Zakharov, other participants were Konstantin Korshunov, Yevgeny Kovalev, Yury Rashkin and Masif Akhunts. The latter was detained in Vladivostok in December 2004, others are still on the wanted list.
