Too Tough for Sharapova
France's Amelie Mauresmo overwhelmed Maria Sharapova of Russia (6-3 3-6 6-2) in the semi-final match in London July 6, 2006, ending Maria’s hopes for the second Wimbledon trophy and crushing the last Russian in the championship. In the men’s singles, Roger Federer will play Jonas Bjorkman and Rafael Nadal will face Marcos Baghdat in today’s Wimbledon semis.
Even at the beginning of the match, when Sharapova and Mauresmo were relatively equal, each of them holding the own serve, there was a feeling of apprehension for the Russian. Mauresmo was playing as the No. 1 should do, i.e. very powerful and almost with no errors. And the French outclassed her opponent in the first set.

There was practically no hope when Mauresmo broke the second set. But Sharapova regained her determined mood, playing aggressively and coming to net. The French lost her nerve and then the whole set.

But having survived the decline, Mauresmo was her usual self in the decider. Sharapova was definitely tied but wasn’t yielding till the very end, even when she lost four games in a row and when the French had a match point, but Mauresmo was too tough for the Russian that day.
