Scientists Oppose Redundancies
Trade Unions of Russia’s Science Academy staged rallies of over two thousands yesterday. The pickets were held in Moscow near headquarters of president’s administration, in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Vladivostok. The scientists oppose redundancy of 22,000 research officers and call for the increase in budget spending for science.
Trade Union activists of almost all regional branches of Russia’s Science Academy went into the streets to protest against the government’s ruling of April 27, 2006, which says the average salary in the Academy will fetch $1,000 by 2008, but the number of research officers will go down by 22,000 (today’s strength is nearly 110,000).
In the RF Education Ministry, they think the scientists could blame themselves for their troubles and they should have protested earlier. The redundancy criteria have been shaped by Presidium of Russia’s Science Academy, said Deputy Minister Dmitry Livanov. “The process wasn’t public,” he specified, “and the ministry couldn’t interfere. The scientists should have held meetings not in front of the president’s administration but in front of the premises of Russia’s Science Academy Presidium.”
