Gazprom to Strip Ukraine Off Turkmen Gas
Russia has apparently succeeded in dashing round Ukraine in negotiations for Turkmen gas – Turkmistan and Gazexport are likely to make a contract for H2 deliveries of natural gas. The matter at stake is 20 bcm, which were to go to Naftogaz Ukrainy at $50/ths cu meters. Having sensed the trouble, Ukraine’s cabinet called the future gas contract a big problem and calculated Naftogaz losses at $1.65 billion.
Russia’s delegation will arrive in Ashkhabad one of these days. They will make a contract for gas deliveries in the second half of the year, Saparmurat Niyazov announced via the national TV Thursday, specifying it will be a big deal.
According to a source close to negotiations, Turkmenistan has proposed a separate agreement for 2006 to 2008 to annually sell 50 bcm to Gazprom at the fixed price. Under this agreement, Turkmenistan suggested making a contract for delivering 20 bcm in the second half of this year.
Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller will soon go to Ashkhabat, his briefer Sergey Kupriyanov confirmed yesterday, declining to elaborate.
