Wine of Moldova, Georgia to Be Poured Out or Removed
The Moscow division of Federal Service on Consumer Rights Supervision (Rospotrebnadzor) ordered to do away with cognac, wine or wine material imported to the city from Moldova or Georgia. This regulation of authorities will lead to $70-million losses of Moscow wine makers and wholesale dealers.
“Due to the absence of current documents confirming the quality and safety of alcohol product, directors of enterprises, warehouses that are engaged in its production, sale or turnover should take actions to withdraw from turnover the alcohol product made and imported from territory of Moldova and Georgia,” the Moscow division of Federal Service on Consumer Rights Supervision said in a letter delivered to the better part of the market players a few days ago.
This move of authorities has rattled the market. Despite that the wine and wine material of Moldova and Georgia have been beyond the law for a few months already, local wine makers apparently never stopped using wine material of Moldova. As to wholesalers, they carried bottles from stores to warehouses with no intention to destroy them.
According to Federal Service on Consumer Rights Supervision, Moscow distilleries currently have over 636,700 decaliters of wine material from Moldova. Wholesalers store in their warehouses from 20 million to 30 million bottles of Moldova’s and Georgian wine worth more than $60 million.
Officially, the importers have to choose now whether to destroy the wine or re-export it. “We have reached no definite decision yet," said Irina Rybakova, head of Rosagroimport, adding that the destruction could be cheaper than re-export.
