Latin America Fond of Su and MiG Jets
Latin American nations are to make more purchases of Russian military hardware soon. Officials in Venezuela and Peru have declared their intentions to buy Russian military jets.
Gen. Alberto Müller Rojas from the Venezuelan General Staff said: “After the United States has put a ban on arms sales to Venezuela, we are considering the purchase of Russian Su-35s to substitute American F-16s.” A source in the Sukhoi company said Wednesday the number of fighters and the price of the deal have not been agreed on yet. The Venezuelan delegation is to arrive in Russia in late May to discuss details of the contract. Caracas earlier declared intentions to buy up to twenty Su-35s for $1 billion, with an option for 30 more jets.
The Peruvian Air Force is set to sign a contract with MiG on refitting 20 MiG-29 fighters, Peru’s La Republica reported. A source of Kommersant in MiG said the company has been in talks on the modernization of MiG-29 jets for Peru for six months now. The refitting of each MiG costs from $1.5 million to $3 million.
