Russia’s Power Energy to Be Coddled by Brazil
Fradkov’s first day in Brazil wasn’t sensational. The discussion of the so-called technological alliance has born some fruit but only in the banking, agricultural and military fields, while aerospace, oil and gas cooperation was shelved till the end of the visit. Actually, these issues could be canvassed by Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in St. Petersburg at G8 summit in July. Prime Minister Fradkov has invited him to attend the event on behalf of President Putin.
Putin’s invitation to G8 summit signals Russia is serious when it comes to building up a bloc of countries with booming economy and is ready to turn the virtual club of future leaders into a real political alliance – BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China).
The concern of Russia’s business in Brazil is more economically-oriented. There are raft of lucrative projects in the country, said managers of Vneshekonombank, Vneshtorgbank, Zarubezhneft, Russian Space Agency, GAZ, Power Machines, Stroytransgaz, who accompany Fradkov in his South American trip. The highlight is the energy projects, said Ara Abramyan, head of Russia’s-Brazilian Entrepreneurs Council, including deliveries of power equipment by Power Machines, involvement in construction of transcontinental gas pipeline of Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina (which is of great interest to Gazprom, Stroytransgaz and Brazil’s Vice-President Jose Alencar). Russia’s Zarubezhneft is predictably eyeing the projects of Brazil’s Petrobras and Oil MC Brazil.
As to the military issues, spokesmen of Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the intent to render material assistance to Brazil in military and technical cooperation and said they count on the growth in export of some types of weapons (including defense systems, armored vehicles) and will continue helping Brazil in construction of nuclear submarine of its own design but subject to certain provisions.
