Govt Opens Market for Imported Machinery
Of 1200 types of manufacturing equipment that have no analogue machinery of Russia’s make, roughly 700 could be imported to Russia free-of-duty. The respective ruling of the government takes effect April 24 to remain valid for nine months.
Seventy percent of equipment operated at Russian plants is morally obsolete, signalled the data of Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. Despite that the import duties were just fiscal, according to Economic Development Minister German Gref, Russia’s entrepreneurs didn't mind to pay 10 percent to 15 percent in addition (the amount of import duties) to renew facilities.

In past April’s message to the Federal Assembly, President Vladimir Putin called on cancelling the duties for imported equipment that is not produced in Russia. German Gref vowed then the respective ruling of the government would come in force February 1, 2006. But the document was stalled in the ministries.

The ruling on import duties cancellation that was sealed by Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and promulgated yesterday will remain in force for nine months. It could be extended once the situation is studied, Deputy PM Alexander Zhukov specified Wednesday.
