Moldova Ready to Contribute to Russia’s Problems
For Russia, this round of talks about the WTO entry was rather disappointing despite the certain advance with the United States. In addition to Georgia, Moldova seems ready to joint the trio of countries (the United States, Australia, Colombia), which haven’t sealed protocols on completing bilateral talks with Russia.
Another sitting of the working group on Russia’s membership in the WTO has failed to match up Russia’s expectations. Russia that counted on getting OK for 13 sections of the working group’s report that specifies the terms for the WTO membership has won approval just for three of them. The whole picture is equally discouraging with no more than 19 sections of 48 agreed as of to-date.

What’s more, Moldova seems ready to revise the sealed protocol on the area for free trading. Chisinau wants to hold new negotiations about the tariff rates. “There are things that I cannot explain,” said Maxim Medvedkov, head of trade negotiations department at Economic Development Ministry when commenting on this demand of Moldova.

Actually, the political background to Moldova’s claims is clear. It is hardly by chance that they were brought in simultaneously with the customs crisis in Moldova’s breakaway Dnestr Region.
