European Boxing Entrusted to Russian

President of the Russian Boxing Federation Eduard Khusainov has been elected president of the European Amateur Boxing Association, one of the most important posts in world amateur boxing, at an extraordinary congress of that organization in Prague on Saturday. The EABA had been led formally by 79-year-old Bulgarian Emil Jetchev but, in practice, Turk Caner Doganeli, whom Khusainov, among others, had severely criticized for using his position for personal gain. In particular, incidents were known of prejudicial judging, especially involving boxers from Turkey. These accusations became especially heated after the Athens Olympics in 2004, where several disputable judgments were made.
Khusainov was supported by representatives of about 20 national teams who were also dissatisfied with the EABA's performance. They had made an official demand in October that an extraordinary congress be held. Khusainov received 25 out of 26 votes at the congress. Doganeli and Zhechev were not present at the session. They have formed an alternative EABA executive committee that met in Bucharest at the same time with 20 in attendance. Khusainov considers himself the new leader of the organization in any case. Immediately after the vote, president of the International Amateur Boxing Association Anwar Chaudhry called him to congratulate him. Khusainov also stated that the legal firm Rossportconsulting verified the legitimacy of the Prague congress in advance. He is promising reforms to make judging more open and honest.
