Russian Trucks Are Ready for Victory
Rally Lisbon - Dakar 2006
Yesterday, on Vasilievsky Spusk (near Kremlin) there was a ceremony of best wishes for Russian rally team “KamAZ- Master.” In January the team will participate in the legendary African rally Lisbon – Dakar.
They wished the best luck to KamAZ team for already the fourth time. This has become a custom already, because three previous rallies were won by a Russian team from Naberezhnye Chelny (place where they build KamAZ super duty trucks).
Fans of the team hope that nothing will prevent “KamAZ – Master” to take the trophy this time as well. Chief of the team Semyon Yakubov, which will take navigator’s chair in the rally, also thinks that the team has as good a chance as last year. Yakubov is not fazed by the fact that rally organizers limited use of GPS in this year’s race. Now, rally drivers and navigators will not be able to see on GPS screen the corridor, which represents the route – they will only see directions of the movement. Yakubov thinks that 15 years of rally experiences for his team would be enough to race without any electronic devices.
Rally, with distance of 9,043 kilometers, starts in Lisbon (Portugal) on Dec. 31. The race will be finished on Jan. 15 in the capital of Senegal –Dakar. Let’s add that beside KamAz team, this year four more Russian teams on the cars and small trucks would be participating in rally – Mitsubishi Track Evo (pilot –Alexei Berkut), two Mitsubishi Pajero (Boris Bukatov and Alexei Vasiliev), and Nissan Pathfinder (Leonid Novotsky). All pilots say that the main thing for them right now is to gain some experience. They remember that during very first rally 15 years ago none of the crews of “KamAZ-Master” team ever reached the finish.
