Iraq and Russia Separate Oil from Politics
Negotiations between Iraqi Foreign Minister Hushiar Zibari and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took place in Moscow yesterday. As Lavrov said at a briefing afterward, “we gave good perspectives for creating ties, including in the field of oil.” Zibari noted that Iraqi authorities intend to establish a joint commission with Russia to settle issues related to renewing Russian oil contracts in Iraq without excessive politicization. “Of course, the Iraqi government is responsible for the contracts that were concluded with Russia during the rule of Saddam Hussein. But we are in favor of settling those issues by technical means, to remove the political aspect,” Zibari said.
Zibari also expressed his interest in having Russia take part in training Iraqi special services and police. “The strong our position in security is, the faster foreign forces will be withdrawn from Iraqi territory,” he concluded.
