Chesnokov Shot, Wounded in Dnepropetrovsk
Russia’s famous tennis player Andrey Chesnokov was carried to the intensive care department of Dnepropetrovsk hospital. Chesnokov was shot and wounded in stomach Sunday night.
Andrey Chesnokov, now 39, arrived in Dnepropetrovsk to hold master classes for young tennis players. Chesnokov said he was attacked at around 1.40 a.m. near Reporter restaurant, Zhovtnev district of the city. Chesnokov, his mate – a tennis player from Morocco, and two local girls were leaving the restaurant. They were followed by a group of young men. One of them lashed out at the girls but was opposed by Chesnokov. In return, a hooligan took out a pistol.

“I kicked his hand, where the pistol was, and smashed a fist in his face,” Chesnokov said. “He fell down but the second attacker ran up to me.” Of four hooligans, three had pistols. One of them shot Andrey from the close distance.

Winner of seven ATP tournaments, Chesnokov became famous when he led Russia’s national team to the Davis Cup final in 1995.

Dnepropetrovsk police vowed to pay 100,000 hryvnias for any information about the attackers.
