Davydenko Sails to Masters Cup Semifinals
Following world number one Roger Federer, Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko has sailed to the semifinals of the year’s final ATP Masters Cup in Shanghai, China. To this effect, Davydenko defeated Gaston Gaudio of Argentina November 16, 2005 and remained leader of the Gold Group.
For Davydenko, Gaston Gaudio is a player of immense difficulty, to whom he yielded five times in five meetings.
The beginning of Shanghai match was far from promising. Davydenko did nearly everything to lose at his serve in the first game, having presented a triple break point to the Argentinean. Nevertheless, Davydenko managed to recover and even force his own manner of playing on Gaudio, who looked somewhat uncertain on the rather fast surface of Shanghai courts. As a result, the Russian claimed his first victory over Gaudio (6-3 6-4) and secured the place in the semifinals. Previously, Davydenko defeated the legendary but suffering from the ankle injury Andre Agassi.
The only question left is from what place he will actually play – from the first or from the second one. The first scenario is much more advantageous, of course, for in this case Davydenko will hardly face Federer in the semifinals and may reach even the Masters Cup final.
