Vestel TV Works Burnt Away
One of Russia’s largest TV makers, the TV works in Alexandrov-town, the Vladimir Region, was on fire yesterday, November 14, 2005. Owned by the Turkish Vestel Elektronik Sanayi ve Ticaret, the works has burnt down along with $40-million investment and ambitious plans of the Turkish company for over 15 percent of Russia’s market of TV sets.
The fire came upon Vestel CIS enterprise at approximately 1:00 p.m. Monday, starting from the plastic pressing shop. As it turned out there were no more than six operating fire trucks in Alexandrov, while the burning area covered more than 5,000 sq m in 15 minutes after the beginning.
The nearby towns stepped in to help in no time and 22 fire trucks and a fire train arrived to the works by 5:00 p.m. By that time, the enterprise had burnt down, and the fire, which covered more than 60,000 sq m, was finally smothered only by 1:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Turkish Vestel started construction of the enterprise in late 2002 to put it in operation in January 2004. The floor space was 120,000 sq m, including around 40,000 sq m covered by production facilities. Vestel investments reached $40 million.
Before the fire, Vestel counted on the works to win around 17 percent of Russia’s TV set market with capacity of around 7 million TV sets on year, according to RATEK.
