Klijsters’ Chances for the 1st Rank Hangs on Dementyeva
Kim Klijsters, the odds-on favorite to end the year as world number one, has lost the second game in a row at the WTA Championships. Now Elena Dementyeva’s match will determine if Klijsters stays at the season-ending tournament in LA.
If one could account Klijsters’ defeat to Mary Pierce by bad luck or the underestimate of the rival, the same can’t be said about the game against Amelie Mauresmo. The Belgian was perfectly aware that one more defeat would jeopardize her chances to advance to semi-finals but she just could not find her feet.

Kim Klijsters now has to go one round better than Lindsay Davenport to get ranked first in the yearly rating. But first she needs to move forward from her group. To make it to semi-finals, Kim Klijsters must overcome Russia’s Elena Dementyeva and later hope for Demenyeva to beat Mauresmo. The Russian, by the way, lost her first match at the competition to Mary Pierce, while Lindsay Davenport won her second game against Patty Schnyder and thus nearly secured herself a place in semi-finals.
