Canada Commemorates Valery Kharlamov
Late Soviet hockey legend Valery Kharlamov has become the fourth Russian to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada.
This was bound to happen. Valery Kharlamov, who died in a motor crash in 1980, is one of the most popular hockey figure in the world. A great number of Russian players have chosen the number of 17 to rever his memory.
Valery Kharlamov’s son, Alexander, as well as many hockey stars attended the ceremony celebrating the inducting of the player’s to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
“I’ve been lucky – I started out with the famous line of Mikhailov, Petrov and Kharlamov,” Vyacheslav Fetisov recollected. “Valery Kharlamov was like a father to me. He took care of me when I was an 18-year-old lad. Those six years when I was in the close contact with Kharlamov was the happiest time for me.”
Valery Kharlamov has become the third player of the Soviet and Russian national team – after Vladislav Tretyak and Vyacheslav Fetisov – to be inducted to the 300-strong Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada. The great Soviet coach Anatoly Tarasov was the first Russian to be given this honor.
