Demetyeva Gets the Last Ticket to the WTA Championships
The line-ups for the two season-ending tennis tournaments, women’s WTA Tour Championships and men’s Masters Cup, were fixed last week. Russia’s Elena Dementyeva and Nikolay Davydenko were among the last to advance to the competitions.
To play at the Masters Cup, Davydenko had to survive to the quarter-finals at Masters event in Paris. It was not difficult given that a number of leading players had earlier decided against going to the French capital. The Russian third-seed was free from a first-round game, after which he beat Greg Rusedski and Dmitry Tursunov. He, however, lost to Radek Stepanek in the next round. On the other hand, the defeat is probably not so tragic. At least, Davydenko will have enough time to get ready for the Masters Cup starting on Sunday. Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia won the eight place to play at the tournament defeating Andy Roddick in the semi-finals.

Women’s tournament in Philadelphia decided on the eight participant of the WTA season-ending event that starts in Los Angeles tomorrow. Russia’s Elena Dementyeva crushed Kvete Peschke and thus made it to the WTA Championships. Maria Sharapova and Nadezhda Petrova secured themselves places at the WTA Championships long before the U.S. tournament.
