Berezovsky Declared Persona Non Grata in Latvia
Latvian Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis sealed yesterday, October 26, 2005, the ruling adding Boris Berezovsky to the list of persons unwelcome in Latvia. The data provided by security services, Kalvitis said when commenting on his decision, makes him sure Berezovsky shouldn’t arrive in the country. The minister hinted the authorities are rather apprehensive of Berezovsky’s influence on the political situation in Latvia, which is setting a stage for parliamentary elections. Berezovsky has some political interest in Latvia, Kalvitis specified, and he would rather Berezovsky couldn’t fulfill it after the Seim’s elections slated for early October 2006, the more so that certain prerequisites for it have been created.
It was the National Security Council of Latvia that recommended internal and foreign ministries of the country to enter Berezovsky into the persona non grata list on October 19, 2005. The Latvian authorities reasoned Berezovsky threatens the national safety of their country. Accusing Berezovsky, Prime Minister Kalvitis mentioned the anti-Latvian campaign of Russia’s ORT TV Channel that Berezovsky had owned for some time and said Berezovsky had been in the RF Security Council.
