Vnukovo Terminal Demolished
Demolition of Vnukovo’s oldest international terminal starts this November, Vnukovo press service said, signaling around $200-million first stage of the project to construct new airport facilities at the area of 86,500 sq m will be launched at the empty space quite soon.
Airport Vnukovo GD Vasily Alexandrov announced demolition of the old international terminal starts in November. Alexandrov meant the oldest building that was constructed far back in 1941 and has been almost always idle for the last a year and a half. The demolition begins in the first decade of November and will take from two to three weeks, specified Vitaly Vantsev, first deputy general director at Airport Vnukovo, adding it actually means the launch of the project to construct a new international terminal.

The principal holders of Airport Vnukovo and International Airport Vnukovo – the government of Moscow, Vnukovo-Invest and Aviation and Oil Co. (the latter two companies are said to be affiliated to Anatoly Vantsev and his son Vitaly) declared last year Vnukovo would have a new international terminal. The project, which was made out by German Obermeyer Planen, covers the area of 220,000 sq m. The first stage that takes 86,500 sq m and costs $200 million is slated for putting in operation in summer of 2007.

But no general constructor has been picked out for the project so far. Vnukovo is yet unclear whether to prefer German Hochtief and Strabag on the one hand, or Russian Transstroy on the other. Vitaly Vantsev promised the respective decision will be taken in the nearest three weeks.

At close of 2004, Vnukovo was far ahead in passenger traffic (2.5 million) against Moscow Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports, each of which posted more than 12 million passengers past year. Though the passenger flow climbed 40 percent (to 2.2 million) in the first eight months of the year, Vnukovo doesn’t suffer from the space shortage. Vantsev hopes the situation will crucially change once the first stage of the project is completed.
