General Denikin Back to the Homeland
The remains of Russian White Army General Anton Denikin, philosopher Ivan Ilyin and of their wives arrived from Paris to Moscow Sunday to be buried in Donskoy monastery today, October 3, 2004. General Denikin’s daughter Marina Denikina, who also came to Moscow, said “the last will of her father has been done” now.
The five-year long story about Anton Denikin's re-burial in Russia is coming to an end today. It dates back to 2000, when Marina Denikina sprang a surprise by saying she would agree to rebury her father in his homeland, should a top-ranked government’s official of Russia ask her about it. In 2003, President Putin met Denikina in the United States and talked over the issue. But the process gained momentum only in 2005, once Putin granted Russia’s citizenship to Denikina and when the Russian Cultural Fund convinced the president the remains of philosopher Ivan Ilyin, his wife and the wife of Denikin should be returned to their home country as well.
Denikin’s bones began their last journey past Tuesday, when the coffin was moved from the U.S. Jackson to New York and then to Paris to be delivered to Moscow, along with the remains of his wife Xenia, Ivan Ilyin and his wife Natalia. Russian Culture Minister Alexander Sokolov and film director Nikita Mikhalkov accompanied the coffins on the way from Paris to Moscow.
From Moscow Vnukovo-1, the coffins were carried to Donskoy monastery to be finally committed to the earth today, October 3, 2005.
