Roman Abramovich Recommended to Kremlin
Presidential envoy to the Far East Federal District, Konstantin Pulikovsky forwarded to Moscow a list of Chukotka’s governor candidates on September 26, 2005. The name of today’s governor, Roman Abramovich, who gave his consent only on September 22, 2005, is the first on the list.
Actually, there are three names on the list of governor candidates – today’s governor Roman Abramovich, whose authority expires December 24, 2005, and his two deputies, specified Evgeny Anoshin, briefer of presidential envoy to the Far East Konstantin Pulikovsky. Not long ago, however, the presidential envoy spoke of the eight names, meaning, perhaps, deputies governor Andrey Gorodilov and Mikhail Sobolev, regional Duma’s speaker Vasily Nazarenko and vice speaker Valentina Rudchenko and some other officials. The list was shortened to three names once Abramovich agreed to stay in the governor’s office for the second term.

Then State Duma’s deputy from Chukotka, Roman Abramovich won the office by the 90.6 percent majority vote at the governor’s election of December 2000.

Pulikovksy attributed nomination of Abramovich for the second term to the solid economy results achieved in time of his office. Nowadays, Chukotka is the sole region in the Far East with no subsidies provided. First time in several years, the tax payments made by Chukotka to the federal budget equaled the sums transferred to the region from the center.

Pursuant to the laws of Russia, President Vladimir Putin should present the candidate of the new governor to Chukotka’s Duma before November 19, 2005. Local Duma’s speaker Vasily Nazarenko told Kommersant they won’t delay approval of Roman Abramovich. “We will agree on his candidacy on the next day,” the speaker promised.
