Lithuania Claims More in Damages
The diplomatic scandal between Russia and Lithuania concerning the crash of Su-27 fighter and detention of the aircraft pilot reached new height Wednesday. Moscow announced it won’t hold the sitting of bilateral government’s commission. As to Vilnius, it intends to revise the charges to be presented to Russia in the wake of the crash.
Russian Su-27 fighter crashed in Sakiai, about 55 km from Lithuanian Kaunas September 15, 2005. The pilot – Russian Air Force Major Valery Troyanov – was unharmed, managed to eject from the aircraft only to be arrested by Lithuanian officers.
Russia demands extradition for Troyanov, who is in Vilnius Balatonas hotel under the home arrest now and return of the wreckage of the aircraft.
The scandal unleashed in the wake of Su-27 crash was escalated yesterday. The RF Foreign Ministry announced Russia won’t hold the sitting of bilateral commission on various types of cooperation and attributed the refusal to “the situation around the incident and actions of Lithuanian party in respect of Major Troyanov.”
Lithuania called on Russia to stick to the international regulations, while the speaker of Lithuanian Seim Arturas Paulauskas accused it in attempting to conceal the true reason of the accident by using propaganda slogans and speeches. The fighter violated the border, it carried four bombs and had armament, Paulaskas specified.
To cap it all, Lithuania is going to revise the bill to be presented to Russia by adding environmental damage to the previously announced ˆ3,000 charged for the land.
