Al-Jazira Finds New Correspondent in Beslan
Amr Abdel-Hamid from Al-Arabia has been appointed to head Moscow bureau of Al-Jazira TV company instead of the former chief Akram Huzam, who suddenly showed a decided preference for documentary films.
On September 21, 2005, Qatar Al-Jazira officially announced resignation of Akram Huzam, now the former editor-in-chief of the Moscow bureau of the TV company. According to Ahmad Al-Sheikh, who is the editor-in-chief in Al-Jazira, Akram Huzam was not dismissed but left at his own request to produce documentary programs.
The statement made by the editor-in-chief is an apparent contradiction to the words uttered by Akram Huzam, who attributed his ouster to complaints of Muslim community of Russia, including Geydar Jemal, head of the Islamic Council of the country.
First of all, Amr Abdel-Hamid is known in Russia thanks to the active coverage of Beslan bloodshed for Al-Arabia. This activity of the new boss of Moscow Al-Jazira was not particularily favored by the Federal Security Service of Russia. As a result, Abdel-Hamid was arrested in the airport of Miniralnye Vody, when he was returning from the Caucasus to Moscow, and faced the charges of illegal keeping of armament. A cartridge for Kalashnikov sub-machine gun, which, the reporter supposed, could have been placed stealthily during his stay in the hotel, was spotted in his bag. Abdel-Hamid didn’t spend much time behind the bars. He was released once the Reporters Without Frontiers stepped in.
Akram Huzam confirmed to Kommersant yesterday he would be making documentary films, but preferred not to link the things happened to Abdel-Hamid to today’s appointment, saying, however, those stories were cloudy.
