Yeltsin and Kohl Wait for Rescuers
Russian ex-President Boris Yeltsin and German former Chancellor Helmut Kohl finish their rest at the Lake Baikal today. The political retirees are visiting the nook where they fished in 1993 after the G8 summit.
On the return from the G8 summit in Japan Helmut Kohl and Boris Yeltsin came to the Baikal to take a vacation. A bath-house was built then especially for them where the chancellor was whipped with a traditional broom [a common way to enhance the effect of the bath]. Kohl enjoyed his staying in Siberia so much that he reminded his “friend Boris” in March 2002 that he “dreams to visit the Baikal one more time”. Yeltsin made a promise and kept it. Last Tuesday, former chancellor, his wife Maike Richter, Boris Yeltsin and his wife Naina came to the Baikal again. They visited the Taltsy museum of wooden architecture which houses everything that was once built by the Angara River: from Evenk tents and Buryat yurts to the remains of the Cossacks gaol. Boris Yetsin said he had enjoyed the troika ride and the dolls exhibition most. The guests were treated to omul, Siberian honey, cranberries and cowberries.
After the excursion, Yeltsin and Kohl went fishing in the place of Dovsha at the north of the Baikal. They fished there back in 1993, and the spot was remarkable for a good bite. This time fish also went to the hook as if mesmerized. Boris Yeltsin surmised that a diver with decoy fish was swimming nearby. Everything was far simpler in reality: the fish had been baited for a few days. Boris Yeltsin and Helmut Kohl were supposed to leave the Baikal yesterday but decided to stay on until Monday. They changed the plans because of the rescuers competition staged by the Emergency Situations Ministry for today. The first Russian president naturally wished to attend the event.
