Elena Dementieva Crashed Out of the French Open
Elena Likhovtseva of Russia saw off her compatriot fourth seed Elena Dementieva to advance to the quarter-finals at the French Open tennis tournament at the Roland Garros stadium May 29, 2005.
For Elena Likhovtseva, last year’s finalist Elena Dementieva is always a troublesome rival. Dementieva had won six of the eight matches against Likhovtseva and was the forerunner of the yesterday’s match, though the odds were short – Dementieva was making too many errors in this tournament and it couldn’t have lasted for ever.
The errors were numerous Sunday, but Likhovtseva, who was a bit more accurate and lucky at the tie-break, took the first, nearly absolutely equal set. Not a single game ended without struggle. Dementieva had 21 break points, Likhovtseva – 16. The rivals lost 11 games at their own service each.
Dementieva made 12 double errors. As a result, Likhovtseva won 7-6; 5-7; 7-5 to meet Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria.
Nadezhda Petrova of Russia advanced to the quarter-finals after beating Elena Bovina.
Top seed Lindsay Davenport ousted Kim Clijsters.
Mary Pierce of France ousted Swiss Patty Schnyder in one of the tensest matches at Roland Garros to meet Lindsay Davenport.
Russia’s Igor Andreev lost to Nicolas Kiefer of Germany.
Russia’s favorite Marat Safin advanced to the 1/8 after he saw off his principal rival and former playmate Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spaine. Safin bowed out to Ferrero at Masters in Hamburg. Safin meets Spanish Tommy Robredo in the fourth round.
