Dementieva Doesn't Fear Difficulties
Last year’s finalist Elena Dementieva of Russia struggled to the second round match of the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros stadium, Wednesday, May 25 in Paris. Dementieva defeated Croatia's Sanda Mamic 7-6 (7), 6-2. Vera Zvonareva of Russia saw off Czech Eva Birnerova.
Yesterday was not the absolutely good day for Russia. Dmitry Tursunov, who was to oppose defending champion Gaston Gaudio, left the tournament because of the knee injury.
All went fairy well then. Elena Dementieva went through with few problems, beating Croatia’s Sanda Mamic. Mamic appeared at first to be no match for Dementieva, who promptly cruised to the break. But strange things happed to Dementieva closer to the end of the first set. Her double error led to the tie-break, which could have ended in favor of Croatia’s player. Mamic even had a set point, which somehow fueled the unpredictable Dementieva to play up to the expectations. After the match Dementieva said it was even better that her round against Croat turned out not so easy, as she is bound to face difficulties and it is necessary to get ready to overcome them.
Vera Zvonareva slumped in the first set against Eva Birnerova. But after sitting on the bench crying, she returned to the court, still in tears, to struggle to victory in the second set and race through the third with a shut-out.
Though failed in the second set, one of the tournament’s favorites Venus Williams ousted Fabiola Zuluaga of Columbia.
