Sharapova Goes Through
French Open second seed Maria Sharapova of Russia went through at Roland Garros May 24, 2005, having defeated Russian Evgenia Linetskaya in a more than complicated match. In men’s tennis, all Russian players passed to the second round.
The yesterday’s match between Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and Evgenia Linetskaya left the audience with mixed feelings. Sharapova trailed 3-1 in the final set before winning 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. On the one hand, Sharapova’s will to victory is undisputable. Apparently ill at ease, Maria has gone through. On the other hand, her future advance in the tournament is questionable, and not because of Linetskaya but because of herself. Sharapova had 17 break points in the match with the nine of them taken. But she will hardly have so many chances to correct her own mistakes when opposing stronger competitions.
A day before Roland Garros, Marat Safin’s coach Peter Lundgren forecasted the first two matches will be crucial in many ways. And Safin made hard work in the first round match to defeat Raemon Sluiter 6-1 4-6 6-4 6-2 to stand against Lukas Dlouhy in the second round.
Mikhail Yuzhny had no problems to beat Gilles Muller. Igor Andreev, Nikolay Davydenko and Dmitry Tursunov advanced to the second round as well.
Another surprise at Roland Garros was Andre Agassi’s loss to Finnish qualifier Jarkko Nieminen in the first round because of the aggravating injury.
