OCRGDF Searches French Castle of Berezovsky
The French Central Office for Fighting Major Financial Crime (OCRGDF) searched Cote d’-Azur castle of exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky yesterday.
The castle was searched in the course of investigation of Berezovsky’s suspected involvement in money laundering, AFP reported referring to the sources close to investigation. The search warrant was issued by a Marseilles judge. Berezovsky himself confirmed to Kommersant that the premises were searched and said that he was unaware of the reasons. The police arrived well-armed and in a helicopter, Berezovsky noted, supposing the search could be linked to the recent meeting of French President Jacque Chirac and President of Russia Vladimir Putin held in Moscow. In time of the search, Berezovsky was staying in London with his wife Elena and children. Only his mother and a steward were in the house. When asked by Kommersant whether his lawyers were present during the investigating action, Berezovsky said the police may search with no lawyers. Late at night Wednesday Kommersant reached by phone the steward of the castle. "They forbade me to give any interview, as they said I am a witness, and I had to sign,” the steward said, pointing out that the officers are still in the premises. OCRGDF declined to make comments but noted that certain explanation might be given today.
