Lithuanian President Covered German Retreat
When asked about the reasons why the Baltic leaders had actually refused Moscow invitation to attend celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Vladimir Chizhov told BBC Monday that one of the Baltic leaders is the solitary survivor among the heads of the states that had fought for Germany in the WW2.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis rebuffed yesterday, having spotted a direct hint to Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus. Valionis called Chizhov’s statement indecent and cynical and reminded that at that time Adamkus participated in the armed resistance against the Soviet occupation which lasted till 1950s.
According to Adamkus autobiography - Name of the Destiny – Lithuania, from the end of August to October 10, 1944, he had served in the 2nd Regiment of Tevynes Apsaugos Rinktine Defense Army commanded by German Colonel (then Major General) Mader.
Adamkus’ regiment covered the German retreat and was destroyed by attacking Soviet forces. Adamkus left Lithuania in a German troop train and moved to Germany.
