Myskina Ousted from the German Open
Roland Garros champion Anastasia Myskina of Russia lost to Germany’s Julia Schruff, who is ranked 107, in the German Open. Russian Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova progressed to the third round.
Anastasia Myskina is more than unlucky in today’s clay season. Though she has never been great in the previous clay tournaments in the United States, this defeat is especially painful. Myskina will hardly be able to defend the title in forthcoming Roland Garros, if she doesn’t improve.

Rather I lost than she won, Myskina said after the match. True, Julia Schruff was not outstanding, while Myskina fought back well only in the second set, which she took easily. But she made so many errors in the decider that could have been crashed out not by the No. 107, but by the No. 200 in tennis.

Myskina said she doesn’t derive pleasure from playing and, perhaps, it would be better if she ignored the tournament. But she has to take part in no less than 13-15 tournaments on year, so there was no choice, Myskina specified, adding she is looking forward to Roland Garros.

Contrary to Myskina, Svetlana Kuznetsova easily ousted Magdalena Maleeva. The match took less than an hour and no one ever doubted the winner.

Maria Sharapova, who may take over as number one 1 in tennis by winning in Berlin this week, advanced to the next round, having won from German Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
