Russians Advance at the 2005 Ice Hockey
Russia defeated Belarus at the 2005 Ice Hockey World Championship in Vienna’s Stadthalle yesterday, having won two from the three matches of the Championship. Vladimir Krikunov’s team tried to be better than in the previous two matches but managed only 2:0.
The Belarus team that had clinched a second-round berth at the World Hockey Championship even before the match played worth of respect. The advantage of Krikunov’s team was undisputable only early in the first period. Later the play took the slow-nervous course. Severely criticized for the match with Slovak team, Kovalchuk was trying hard but didn’t pay great.
The second period started on the edge of the nervous breakdown. But the real high spot of the match occurred only in the eighth minute. Pavel Datsyuk faced Belarus goalie Andrey Mezin but failed to outgame. In a minute Russia’s team set up the go-ahead goal. Full-back Sergey Vyshedkevich forwarded the puck to the center, where Alexander Kharitonov was faster than both full-backs of the competitor.
The Russians were obviously stronger in the third period. Almost half of Russian attackers could have scored but the puck was forwarded to the gate by the full-back Sergey Vyshedkevich, who was the best in the team in the match. As a result, the Russians won 2:0.
For Russia and Belarus, the first round ended yesterday. Both teams as well as Slovakia secured a berth in the next round. The scores they won while opposing each other will be taken into account.
