Davydenko Broken in Monte Carlo
Nikolay Davydenko of Russia failed to advance in the tennis Masters Series Monte Carlo. Davydenko lost in the third round vs. French Richard Gasquet in Monaco, Thursday April 14, 2005, though his chances for victory were solid.
In Monte Carlo, Richard Gasquet was close to losing the battle. No. 10 seed Nikolay Davydenko seemed in no hurry to warm up, he lost the game at his serve, allowing Gasquet to lead 3:0. It could have been 4:0 but Davydenko started playing at last. As a result, the set nearly taken by the French was won by the Russian. In the second set, Davydenko was leading at 5:3 and it was his serve. Still, Gasquet made two breaks and took the set. In the third set, Gasquet was definitely stronger. He continued his quest for the Masters Series Monte-Carlo title, having moved to the quarterfinals after defeating Davydenko in a highly competitive battle - 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. For Gaskquet it will be the first quaterfinals of Masters Series. His next opponent is Swiss Roger Federer, who defeated Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4.
