Safin Wins as Experiment
Two Russian tennis players – Marat Safin and Nikolay Davydenko - overwhelmed their opponents, reaching the second round of the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters Series. Igor Andreev is out of the tournament.
Marat Safin has not fared well recently, having lost at the early stages of two Masters Series in Indian Wells and Miami. In Monte Carlo, No. 2 seed Safin advanced defeating Korean Hyung-Taik Lee 6-0, 7-5. After the match Safin said he decided to experiment in the second set to feel at home on clay.
Contrary to Safin, Davydenko’s victory vs. Jurgen Melzer was not a walkaway. Still, Davydenko was better and moved to the second round to face Albert Costa, a 1996 finalist in Monte-Carlo. Igor Andreev, who won his first ATR in Valencia last week lost to Guillermo Canas. World No. 1 Roger Federer won over Britain Greg Rusedski in advance to the second round. Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten fell to the No. 13 seed Mario Ancic in his third match back since hip surgery.
