Metro Group Steps Up by Retail
German Metro Group is stepping up in Russia to double the sales in the region over the nearest three years, Bloomberg reported with reference to Metro Group’s CEO Hans-Joachim Korber. 2004 turnover of Russia’s Metro reached ˆ893 million.
Until recently, Metro has been represented in the country only by its wholesale Metro Cash & Carry stores trading in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Samara, Yaroslavl, Krasnodar. The first retail store, Real hypermarket will open in Moscow this year. Soon, Metro’s Mediamarkt (household appliances) will appear in Russia as well. The analysts say Real and Mediamrkt will accompany Metro’s wholesale centers in the regions.
Regional expansion is one of the core trends noted among the Big 10 retailers. This year, Perekrestok launches two hypermarkets in Kazan and two hypermarkets in Nizhni Novgorod; Marta holding opens 20 regional Grossmarts; Volgograd, Kazan and St. Petersburg will have three new Ramstors each. The experts forecast the regions will go through a consumer boom in two or three years, therefore, the federal retailers are pressing ahead not to miss the start.
