Vneshekonombank Given A Fright
An object closely resembling a self-made bomb was spotted in the office car of Yury Zaostrovtsev, deputy board chairman at Vneshekonombank (VEB). It was a dummy used, perhaps, as a warning either to Zaostrovtsev personally or to the bank’s management as a whole.
The guards spotted a small oval object with a red light-emitting diode on the hood of Mercedes 500 waiting for the banker near the central entrance to VEB headquarters at Akademika Sakharova Str. past Friday. Zaostrovtsev was leaving at 2:30 p.m. and the car had been searched before the departure.
The place was encircled, the central entrance blocked. A dog called Roni, who arrived with the officer an hour and a half later, found no explosive. Roni was right. By 6:00 p.m., the dog’s qualification was confirmed by a portable gas detector, the so-called electronic nose, applied by the officers from the interior department and the Federal Security Service.
However, the dummy was obviously made by an expert skilled in explosive operations. He could have assembled a real bomb but, for some reason, preferred not to do it. Besides, it is still unclear, how the dummy had been installed on the hood of the car left in the parking of the bank’s top managers and continuously eyed by video cameras. The officers said it might have been a warning, either to Zaostrovtsev in person or to the bank’s management as a whole.
