Andreev Plays As If At Home
Russia’s Igor Andreev celebrates his first win at the ATP clay court tournament after beating David Ferrer of Spain during their final match in Valencia.
In Valencia, 14 from the 32 tennis players stood for Spain. Therefore, only a few doubted the country of origin of the winner.
Igor Andreev was definitely not tipped as the favorite. First, he lost nearly half of his matches this year, second, already in the quarter-final, he had to oppose Spain’s favorite and third seed Rafael Nadal. However, Andreev beat Nadal easily as then won from Ivan Navarro Pastor in the semifinals.
In the final match vs. Spanish David Ferrer, Igor Andreev was a bit stronger in the first set and at the start of the second game, when he led 4:2 and 5:4, but Ferrer tied the score by sets. In the third set, Ferrer also managed to trim the gap from 1:5 to 3:5, but Andreev was better and won his first title.
