Dementieva Served at Backhand to Reach Semis in Indian Wells
Russian fourth seed Elena Demetieva advanced to the semifinal in the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California, having defeated her compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova.
It was a rematch of the 2004 U.S. Open final won by Kuznetsova. But in Indian Wells, she handed the victory to Dementieva. Kuznetsova double faulted in the final game to give Dementieva three match points. Still, she was able to get to deuce, got over the fourth match point but double faulted on the fifth one and suffered a defeat to Dementieva.

“She played very well, but I was better. I was trying to serve at her backhand," Dementieva said after the match.

In the semis, Dementieva will face either American Lindsay Davenport or Nathalie Dechy of France.
