World's Richest and Poorest under Discussion at Davos
Participants in the World Economic Forum in Davos took on poverty in Africa and the excessive wealth of the ruling classes in the West yesterday. The Russian economy was mentioned in a favorable light in a discussion of developing economies.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair raised the key issues of counteracting global warming and poverty in his opening speech. He also took part in a discussion on poverty at which Microsoft head Bill Gates, former U.S. president Bill Clinton, South African singer Bono from the group U2 also took part.
At a seminar entitled “Is Business Guided by Noble Goals,” participants noted that the gap between the rich and the poor is growing and that business leaders rarely engage in any activities that do not lead to increased profits for themselves. Elsewhere, president of OPEC, Kuwaiti Minister of Oil Ahmad as-Sabah discussed oil prices.
At a seminar devoted to developing markets, general director of the Heritage Capital firm William Brauder called Russia an attractive place for investment.
