Tashkent Doesn’t Welcome Crisis Guests
Tadjikistan’s authorities announced yesterday that Uzbekistan closed borders in late November without giving any explanation. Tashkent pledges to sort out the problem in the near term but prefers not to disclose the root cause of the decision. The analysts speculate that Uzbekistan probably apprehends the surge in migration inflow from Tadjikistan that is suffering from global financial collapse.
It was Kasym Gafarov, the first deputy chairman of Tadjikistan’s State Committee for National Security that announced the shut-down of borders. Gafarov told RIA Novosti that Uzbekistan unilaterally closed all entry check points November 28 without preliminary notifying Tadjikistan.

Nowadays, only the holders of diplomatic passports, the RF citizens and the residents of Tadjikistan returning from Uzbekistan to their homeland may cross the border.

The Uzbek Embassy in Tadjikistan released an official statement yesterday specifying that foreign ministries of the countries are in talks to deal with the problem and will settle it in the near term. No explanations were given. Earlier, Tashkent had closed borders before the presidential election and the Independence Day, so one of the reasons was probably the Constitution Day that Uzbekistan celebrates December 8.

But there is a different opinion. The true cause of the move was perhaps the apprehended surge in migration flow from Tadjikistan, where the global financial collapse capsized the economy.
