Russia Closed Ranks with Venezuela
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev paid a two-day visit to Venezuela. The biggest achievement of president's tour was, perhaps, the memorandum on creating a mega-consortium by oil blockbusters of Russia and by the state-run oil company of Venezuela. In addition to attaining a raft of agreements, Medvedev was decorated with the Liberator Order in Caracas.
Dmitry Medvedev negotiated with his Venezuela’s counterpart Hugo Chavez in Caracas late Wednesday. The event gathered the truly big business of Russia. Rosneft President Sergei Bogdanchikov, LUKOIL chief Vagit Alekperov, Surgutneftegaz CEO Vladimir Bogdanov, Gazprom Deputy CEO Alexander Medvedev were waiting for the news conference together with reporters.
The concern of big oilmen in Caracas was the memorandum for creating a consortium to implement oil projects in Venezuela, including in Carabobo region, which had been closed for all outsiders until recently.
Vice premier Igor Sechin, who supervises the energy issues in Russia, showed up a bit later. It was the third Venezuela’s trip of Sechin from September.
The officials of Russia and Venezuela signed a raft of agreements before Dmitry Medvedev and Hugo Chavez. Amid them were the memorandum of understanding between the United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia and Venezuela’s Oil Company, the intergovernmental agreement for the civic use of nuclear energy, the agreement for short-term visa-free trips of residents of both countries and others.
Amid other things, President Hugo Chavez decorated Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev with the Liberator Order. The ceremony was staged before the Liberator himself – a painting depicting Venezuela’s Independence hero Simon Bolivar dominated the hall, although the extent of that dominance yielded to the dominance generated by Hugo Chavez.
