Brands of Russia’s Banks Still Expensive
The financial turmoil hasn’t drastically lowered the worth of local brands in the banking sector, showed the Interbrand rating of most expensive brands in Russia. The brands of the Bank of Moscow, Alfa Bank and Russian Standard lost 2 percent to 5 percent from 2007 but the worth of VTB brand stood still and Sberbank gained 1 percent. At the same time, the worth of seven biggest banks in the world shed between 3 percent and 21 percent, according to the global rating of Interbrand.
Interbrand and Kommersant-Dengi (Kommersant-Money) has released today the fourth rating of Top 40 brands of Russia, which worth is the highest. The rating was compiled based on 2006-2007 accounting reports coupled with the outlook for 2008 through 2012. The worth is given in U.S. dollars to compare Russia’s Top 40 with the global rating. The 2008 estimate is based on the 2007 weighted average rate of $25.55 per a ruble, while the 2007 list was compiled based on the rate of $27.14 per a ruble.
If the accession to Top 40 cost $69.7 million (RUSAL) past year, this year’s threshold surged to $76.8 million (VTB). Similar to all previous years, Beeline is the most expensive brand in Russia; its worth widened by another 4 percent to $7.43 billion. Beeline and MTS (soared 19 percent this year to $6.92 billion) could have occupied the 52nd and the 56th lines in the Global Top 100 if they had met the global requirement and generated over 30 percent of their revenues overseas.
The global rating of Interbrand that was released in September showed the decline in the brand worth of all banks of the Top 100. HSBC, for instance, sank 3 percent and Merrill Lynch shed 21 percent. Of five banks in Russia’s Top 40, the decline was reported only for the Bank of Moscow (2 percent to $273 million), Alfa Bank (4 percent to $380 million) and Russian Standard (5 percent to $219 million). But the worth of VTB brand stood still and Sberbank stepped up 1 percent to $401 million.
The brands of Baltika brewery, Yarpivo (down 14 percent to $213 million) and Arsenalnoe (down 18 percent to $294 million) suffered the heftiest losses, although the brand of Baltika gained 9 percent to $2.38 billion. The analysts attribute the reduction to Baltika’s stake on the premium brands.
